Sungmin Kim is a partner in the Corporate and M&A Practice Group at Lee & Ko and currently serves as the Head of the firm’s Startups Team. His practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), corporate governance, joint ventures (JV), cross-border investments, corporate restructuring, foreign direct investment, and general corporate advisory matters.
Mr. Kim has extensive experience advising on a broad range of M&A transactions, including share acquisitions, business transfers, mergers, spin-offs, comprehensive share exchanges, tender offers, and holding company restructurings. He is particularly recognized for his work on cross-border transactions involving multiple jurisdictions, representing Korean companies in outbound investments as well as foreign investors in inbound investments into Korea.
As the Head of the Startup Team, Mr. Kim also provides strategic and comprehensive legal advice to a wide range of domestic and international startups throughout their business lifecycle—from the incorporation and early-stage operations to fundraising, growth, and exit transactions. His experience spans diverse industry sectors, enabling him to deliver practical and commercially focused solutions tailored to high-growth businesses.
Since 2020, Mr. Kim has been consistently recognized by The Legal 500 as a Next Generation Partner and by IFLR1000 as a Highly Regarded Lawyer in the area of Corporate and M&A. In 2023, he was selected as one of Asian Legal Business’s “Korea Super 30 Lawyers,” and most recently, in 2025, he was honored as “Lawyer of the Year” by Legal Times.
Prior to joining Lee & Ko, Mr. Kim served as a military prosecutor for the Korean Army and legislative officer at the Legislative Task Force Team on Improvement of Defense Procurement System for the Ministry of Defense, where he managed amendment process of the Defense Acquisition Program Act and other defense-related laws and regulations.
Mr. Kim received his LL.M. degree from UCLA School of Law in 2015 and worked at Mayer Brown LLP (Chicago office) as a Foreign Attorney (2015-2016). He is a member of the Korean Bar and the California State Bar.
