Hyung Sub Lim is a partner in Lee & Ko’s Dispute Resolution Group and a co-head of the firm’s North Korea Practice. He advises on a broad range of disputes, with particular focus on financial and capital markets, IT and technology, corporate governance, and matters involving religious organizations. Since joining the firm in 2007, he has handled numerous high-stakes disputes involving financial regulation, information technology, governance, and public policy.

In the financial and capital markets area, Mr. Lim has acted on matters arising from major banking incidents, the mis-selling of financial investment products such as equity-linked securities (ELS), and litigation involving funds and trusts. He also advises on disputes concerning virtual assets, electronic financial transactions, and the development and operation of IT systems. He holds an LL.M. in Financial Law from Korea University, combining academic training with substantial practical experience.

As head of Lee & Ko's Religious Conflict Resolution Practice, Mr. Lim represents clients in disputes unique to religious organizations, including those involving senior pastor status, injunctions to suspend the performance of duties, church property, and the validity of internal disciplinary actions. He develops coordinated strategies across civil, criminal, and administrative proceedings, drawing on a deep understanding of denominational constitutions and bylaws.

Mr. Lim also leads the firm's North Korea & Unification Laws Practice, advising on inter-Korean economic cooperation, North Korea-related foreign investment, sanctions compliance, and unification legislation and policy. In recognition of his contributions to policy advisory and legislative research, he received a Commendation from the Minister of Unification in 2022.

He has served on a number of government and professional committees, including the Policy Advisory Committee and the Unification Legislation Promotion Council of the Ministry of Unification, the Special Subcommittee on Inter-Korean Legislation of the Ministry of Justice, and the Committee on Inter-Korean Law of the Ministry of Government Legislation. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Korean Bar Association's Unification Research Committee.

Mr. Lim has been ranked as a Leading Individual by Chambers Global since 2023 in "North Korea — General Business Law" and "Foreign Experts (Corporate/M&A) for North Korea."

Drawing on this cross-sectoral experience, Mr. Lim advises corporations, financial institutions, public entities, and religious organizations on complex disputes involving multiple layers of legal and commercial issues. His recent work increasingly addresses matters at the intersection of law and technology, including financial regulation, digital assets, artificial intelligence, and platform industries.

Advised the Ministries of Unification, Foreign Affairs, and Justice on policy research relating to inter-Korean economic cooperation and international sanctions against North Korea
Advised the Ministry of Unification on U.N. and U.S. sanctions in connection with inter-Korean economic cooperation and on follow-up measures to the Panmunjom Declaration
Advised on the establishment of a joint venture in the Mt. Geumgang International Tourist Zone

Represented a major bank in disputes arising from a large-scale financial incident (approx. USD 51.5 million), spanning Financial Supervisory Service dispute resolution, deposit-return and damages claims, and provisional remedies
Represented leading banks and securities firms in litigation involving ELS fund mis-selling, suitability obligations, churning, and disclosure duties
Represented an investment trust management company in private real estate investment trust litigation

Advised and represented religious organizations in management- and property-rights disputes, including matters before a graduate school of theology council
