Lee & Ko played a vital role in Seoul National University Hospital’s (“SNUH’s”) successful bidding of the management contract for Sheikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital (“SKSH”) located in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, which is owned by the UAE’s Ministry of Presidential Affairs (“MOPA”). SNUH was awarded the 5-year management contract in August 2014, and Lee & Ko was heavily involved in all aspects of the process leading up to the execution of the hospital management contract with MOPA, including the shaping of SNUH’s bidding strategy, and the negotiation of the terms of the hospital management contract. This case is particularly noteworthy given that SNUH is the first Korean hospital to win a management services contract for a major foreign full-service hospital. SNUH beat out several other leading hospitals from other countries to secure SKSH-RAK’s management contract, which showed that Korea’s medical services and doctors are being recognized by others as some of the best in the world.
Following the execution of the hospital management contract in 2014, Lee & Ko has continued advising SNUH on various legal issues arising in connection with SNUH’s operation of SKSH-RAK. As SNUH’s SKSH-RAK management contract is set to expire next year, Lee & Ko is currently advising SNUH on the renewal of the management contract so that SNUH may continue its operation of the hospital for an additional term.
