Joon Won Lee specializes in international arbitration and has extensive experience across multiple sectors including construction, infrastructure, energy, defense, pharmaceuticals and foreign direct investment. His practice encompasses representing sovereign and private clients in international arbitration proceedings, obtaining arbitration-related injunctive relief, and handling recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards as well as set-aside proceedings.

Prior to joining Lee & Ko, Joon Won served as a public service advocate in the International Legal Affairs Division at the Korean Ministry of Justice, where he exclusively managed ICSID and UNCITRAL investment arbitration cases against the Republic of Korea and provided advisory services on public international law matters.

Joon Won’s expertise encompasses international investment law, private international law, overseas construction, energy and nuclear power projects, as well as international trade measures. He frequently advises clients on complex cross-border transactions and negotiations. Additionally, Joon Won has recently been appointed as Expert Advisor to the Emergency Assistance Expenses Review Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Consular Affairs and Safety Bureau, where he provides strategic guidance on critical matters involving Korean nationals abroad.

Represented the Republic of Korea in a USD 770 million UNCITRAL arbitration brought by Elliott Associates under the Korea-US FTA
Represented the Republic of Korea in a USD 200 million UNCITRAL arbitration brought by Mason Capital under the Korea-US FTA
Represented a Korean government agency in an ICC arbitration against a German corporation regarding breach of supply contract
Represented a Korean engineering firm in an ICC arbitration against a Qatari state-owned entity concerning construction delays and damages
Represented a Korean company in a KCAB arbitration against an Omani manufacturer for breach of sales contract
Represented a Korean engineering firm in litigation proceedings against a Qatari state-owned entity regarding alleged design defects
Extensive advisory work on CISG, bilateral investment treaties, free trade agreements, WTO agreements and international trade measures
Advised the Korean government on its participation as a third party in WTO proceedings
Represented the Korean government in USDOC countervailing duty proceedings concerning Korean steel products (hot-rolled steel plates, cold-rolled steel sheets, and carbon alloy steel plates)
