Sungsoo (Sean) Hwang is a partner patent attorney at Lee & Ko IP in charge of patent prosecutions in electrical and mechanical areas. He has an extensive experience with a demonstrated history of successfully representing multinational corporations before the Korean Intellectual Property Office, IP Tribunal, Patent Court, and Supreme Court. His practice focuses on patent prosecutions and trials, patent invalidation and infringement analysis, patent prior arts searches, pre-litigation patent strategies and patent litigation.
Mr. Hwang has extensive patent prosecution experience and has handled patent disputes in a wide range of technologies, including particular specialization in electrical/computer engineering, telecommunications, digital signal processing, semiconductor devices and manufacturing processes, medical devices and computer software technology. He was admitted to the Korean Patent Bar in 2003 and is currently a member of the Korean Patent Attorneys Association.
Mr. Hwang received his B.E. and M.E. in electronic and electrical engineering (1996, 1998) from Seoul National University. His master’s thesis is a study of CDMA communication systems with interference cancellation processing. He also earned an LL.M. degree in 2012 from Northwestern Pritzker School of Law at Chicago, IL.
Mr. Hwang worked at Samsung Electronics from 1998 to 2004 as a senior engineer in the wireless communication division, where he developed next generation mobile phones and worked as a member of task force team to develop new core chipsets, and also worked at Samsung Electronics in-house intellectual property team. Prior to joining Lee & Ko IP, Mr. Hwang served as a principal patent attorney at the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), where he was responsible for patent portfolio management. He also worked at Kim & Chang from 2005 to 2017 as a senior patent attorney, where he handled a variety of intellectual property matters ranging from litigation, prosecution, IP transactions and portfolio management.
